Cumbria Men’s League champions Distington continued their winning start to the new campaign with a convincing 42-10 home victory over Glasson Rangers.

They dominated the first-half and were well on the way by half-time as they enjoyed a 24-0 advantage at the break.

Four tries relatively equally spread throughout the half were all converted by Clayton Sutton.

Liam McNicholas set the ball rolling with the first after only three minutes and after 14 minutes Bryan Ritchie also crossed the Glasson line.

Goal-kicker Sutton got in on the try-scoring act with the third after 25 minutes and then eight minutes before the break Steven Conway scored the fourth.

Glasson needed a quick score early in the second-half to give themselves some sort of foothold in the game – and they got it. Dean Petre went in for an unconverted try.

But ten minutes later it was business as usual for the champions as Gavin Martin scored and two more tries, in a ten minute spell, from Conway and Martin took the game well away from the visitors. Sutton never missed a kick all afternoon.

Glasson did get another score but it was only a consolation try from Keenan Winter on 68 minutes which was converted by Sean Mumberson.

Two years ago Walney Central and Maryport were main rivals for the Men’s League title before the south Cumbrians triumphed. Last year Maryport were never in contention but this time round they look more competitive.

However when they met at Walney it was the home side who emerged the winners 26-12 after doing their best work in the opening 40 minutes.

Somebody was going to get off the mark for the season when Wath Brow hosted Roose Pioneers as both were looking for their first points.

It was the Hornets who triumphed 36-28 to get their first win on the board.

They couldn’t have wished for a better start as Roose appeared to be still on the bus. After 33 minutes the young Hornets had opened up a 24-0 lead and appeared to be cruising.

Conner Molyneux had gone over after only three minutes and then ten minutes later Jason Connery both scored and converted try.

A third try followed on 18 minutes from Clarke Riley and soon afterwards it was Rhys Prithard’s turn to cross the Roose line. The Pioneers look sunk when Sam Cruden scored the fifth try, converted by Connery.

But credit to Roose as they finished the half well with two tries in the last four minutes by Ben Lyndsey and Adam Batty, both converted by George Smith.

Wath Brow responded well after the break with a second try for Cruden on 43 minutes which Connery converted.

Roose stormed back and tries on 50 and 56 minutes from Mark Humphreys and Batty, the second converted by Smith, kept them in the picture.

Wath Brow needed another score to keep themselves in clear water and it was Curtis Teare who got his second try, converted by Connery.

But battling Roose had the final score five minutes from time as Smith went over and added the conversion.

Slow into their stride this season under new coach Mark Taylor, Seaton are now coming to and they had an excellent 28-10 win at Hensingham with first-half tries from Mark Surtees, Miguel Blanco Charters and Tom Curwen.

In the second half, Logan Barker, Lewis Mason and man of the match Jordan Ostle all crossed.
