Both Penrith and Workington Reds will be looking to end their respective seasons on a high at Brunton Park tonight.

The two sides endured hectic finishes to their league seasons, with Jim Nichols’ Penrith playing nine Northern League fixtures in April, while Reds also played nine games in the month, as their bid for National League North promotion ended in their play-off semi-final defeat at Stourbridge.

But both teams have had more than a week to recover for a shot at silverware this evening (kick-off at 7pm) after the end of their league campaigns.

Bonny Blues boss Nichols, who took charge at Frenchfield Park in September, could win the Cumberland Cup trophy at the end of his opening season as Penrith manager after guiding the side to 12th in the league.

But Nichols is not overly-concerned about that achievement, although he is looking forward to getting the opportunity to manage his players on a Brunton Park pitch which helped Carlisle United win League Two groundsteam of the year last week.

Nichols said: “I’m not really thinking about that [winning a trophy at the end of his first campaign at the helm at Penrith].

“A few of the senior players have played at Brunton Park before. But I think most of the lads have not played there in senior football.”

Top scorer Martyn Coleman and goalkeeper Jonny Jamieson are among Penrith’s players to have had spells with the Workington club, while Robbie Hebson has played for both clubs this season.

“There is quite a few of ex-players on both sides. So, I’m sure they will be going all out. There is a lot of personal battles,” Nichols said.

“It is certainly the two biggest clubs in non-league football in Cumbria for me. Hopefully, people come down and we get them watching.”

Meanwhile, Mathew Read has recently returned to Penrith and scored in their 2-1 win at Sunderland RCA last Tuesday as they ended their Northern League campaign on a high.

On the return of Read, Nichols added: “I just felt we missed a bit of bite and energy in midfield.

“I had a chat with Mathew and I said I cannot guarantee you a place but you are welcome back. He did well on Tuesday.”

Penrith have got the better of Carlisle City and Silloth (both on penalties) as well as Northbank and Braithwaite to reach the last two.

Reds have seen off Pirelli (penalties), Cleator Moor Celtic, Frizington White Star and Aspatria to reach the final.
