Aspatria 1 Workington Reds 4: Workington Reds landed the Cumberland Cup with a 4-1 win against Aspatria at Brunton Park after a final that became tighter than it had looked early on.

Reds had gone 2-0 up inside 20 minutes with goals from Anthony Wright and Gareth Arnison as they completely dominated the game.

But Aspatria rallied, closed the half out well and opened brightly after the break. When Arnison had a penalty saved by Daniel Swan, Aspatria gave themselves hope with a goal from Malcolm Graham but Reds finished strongly.

Conor Tinnion scored one of his brilliant goals and Scott Allison added his 32nd of the season.

Reds boss Derek Townsley joined a minority group of people who have played in a Cumberland Cup winning side and gone on to manage one.

Carlisle-based Townsley had played as a youth team player with Carlisle United when they were successful and, in 2007, was in the Workington team which lifted the cup under under Tommy Cassidy.

He had to go into the final at Brunton Park against Aspatria without a handful of regulars but it meant opportunities for several members of the Reds reserves’ side.

Workington dominated the early exchanges as Aspatria were pushed back and could not get out of their own half.

Reds were using the whole width of the pitch and with Aspatria appearing nervous early on they gave the ball away too cheaply.

Anthony Wright was a dominant force in midfield for Reds and he had the first shot in anger which was acrobatically turned over the bar by Daniel Swan, Aspatria’s highly-rated young keeper.

But on 15 minutes it was Wright who found the back of the net, beating the diving Swan. He engineered a shooting opportunity five yards outside the box and a low, angled shot beat the diving Swan to find the bottom corner.

Workington were now playing all the football and it was no surprise when they doubled their lead five minutes later.

Clever build-up play ended with Matty Tymon slipping-in Gareth Arnison who finished sublimely with a little dink over Swan as the keeper went down.

There were really serious signs that Reds would run away with the game but shots from Conor Tinnion and Arnison were easily held by Swan, while Tymon shot wide from a good position.

Reaction:   Workington Reds beat Aspatria to win Cumberland Cup

Gradually, though, Aspatria seemed to settle and find some passing rhythm to finally make headway in the Workington half. A through ball for Richard Hudson was just too far in front of him and keeper Jonny Jamieson collected.

Then the best chance of the half for Aspatria. Great footwork by skipper Daryl Creighton, including a nutmeg on Kyle May, saw him drift in from the right. On the edge of the penalty area he tried a shot at goal which was wide, with Ben Jefferson screaming for the ball out on the left.

Aspatria ended the half more encouraged by the way they had come into the contest but went in 2-0 down.

Encouraged by how they had finished the first half, Aspatria started well after the break with Richard Hudson operating down the middle and looking more dangerous.

It was Workington who were making mistakes and Aspatria who were first to second balls. But Reds had a chance to increase their lead on 54 minutes when Tinnion was tripped in the box.

Arnison stepped-up to take the spot-kick but Swan, who had saved 19 of the last 24 penalties he had faced, went the right way to make a full-length save.

That lifted Aspatria and five minutes later they reduced the arrears. Sean Law curled a free-kick round the Workington wall and, although Jamieson got across well, the ball cannoned off his chest to Malcolm Graham who tapped home.

For the first time there were doubts in the Workington ranks but they weathered the storm and came back strongly in the final quarter.

A vital third goal came on 70 minutes and it was another Tinnion gem. He went across the Aspatria defensive line before unleashing a terrific left-foot shot which gave Swan no chance as it whistled into the top corner.

That goal settled any Workington nerves and they finished the game on top.

May, desperate for a goal to complete his Reds career on his final appearance, got on the end of one Simpson corner but directed a header wide.

But a fourth goal did arrive eight minutes from time when Simpson put a low ball into the box. Allison collected and in one movement slipped the ball beyond Swan into the bottom corner.
