Crewe Alexandra 0 Carlisle United 1: Carlisle United scored a bizarre goal in the last minute to book their place in the second round of the FA Cup.

They won the first round tie through Jamie Devitt, as home keeper Ben Garratt's clearance struck the midfielder and rebounded into the net.

It was enough to clinch a place in Monday night's draw and also secure £36,000 prize money.

The dramatic finish came after Danny Grainger had a first-half penalty saved before the Blues survived second-half pressure.

Grainger had the chance to put United ahead in the 23rd minute after home keeper Garratt brought down Richie Bennett.

But Garratt guessed correctly as he dived to his right to keep out the spot-kick.

There were a number of other opportunities for both sides in an open first 45 minutes.

Devitt shot wide in the first minute for United while Chris Porter failed to connect with a Kevin O'Connor cross in a great position for the hosts early on.

Devitt went even closer with a dipping attempt from 25 yards before Garratt denied Regan Slater, Anthony Gerrard then heading over a Devitt cross.

Ref Lee Swabey's decision to penalise Garratt for fouling Bennett, after a move involving Jerry Yates and Hallam Hope, incensed the home fans and players.

After the penalty save, further Swabey decisions upset the Crewe contingent.

David Artell's side then went close through Oliver Finney, whose goalbound volley was blocked by Macaulay Gillesphey.

Gary Liddle had a United attempt blocked while Alex Nicholls sliced wide from a good position for the hosts shortly before the break.

The second half saw Hope and Grainger denied by Garratt but it was Crewe who had much of the pressure, with Finney again denied by a block.

The hosts dominated for spells but struggled to seriously examine Adam Collin, who did save well from a curling Charlie Kirk shot.

Sub Shaun Miller headed over against his old club late on before Devitt snatched the victory in unlikely style.

Garratt had been named man-of-the-match minutes earlier but his afternoon will be remembered for the late blunder that saw Devitt score.

Hope was back from injury and started for Carlisle as one of three changes made by manager John Sheridan.

Striker Bennett and midfielder Slater also came into the team.

Dropping to the bench were George Glendon and Jack Sowerby, with Ashley Nadesan declined permission to play by parent club Fleetwood.

United will be ball number 37 in Monday night's second round draw.
