Carlisle United 3 Workington 2: Sam Adewusi grabbed the winner as Carlisle twice came from behind to beat Workington Reds in their Cumberland Cup first round clash.

The midfielder scrambled home from close range in the 73rd minute to seal a 3-2 victory for a young Blues side.

A United team featuring several young pros, including Liam McCarron, Max Brown, Jack Egan and keeper Louis Gray, had to work hard for their victory against a Reds second string at Penrith’s Frenchfield Park.

Workington took a seventh-minute lead when a shot from the left was deflected into Nathan Dryden’s path, and the striker slotted past Gray.

United levelled five minutes later when Brown turned and fed Egan, who raced through to fire past Lewis Casson.

The west Cumbrians then regained their lead on the 21-minute mark as United failed to deal with an inswinging Cam Harker corner, Lewis Tidy turning it home at the back post.

Brown, though, got Carlisle’s second equaliser on 49 minutes after Charlie Birch raced down the left to set him up.

And United completed their comeback midway through the second half when a Birch free-kick caused problems for Workington, Adewusi turning the ball home from close range.
