Carlisle United fans sang “There’s only one Tony Hopper” as they remembered the former midfielder on an emotional afternoon.

Hopper, who died last week, was saluted with a minute’s applause by the 4,569 crowd before Saturday’s defeat to Morecambe at Brunton Park.

Fans then broke into song for the popular Cumbrian in the 42nd minute in a further tribute to the 42-year-old.

Several members of Tony’s family were at the stadium to see the club honour the man who had bravely fought motor neurone disease.

United boss John Sheridan said: “I didn’t know him myself but from reading the programme, and what people have said throughout the week, he was by all accounts a lovely lad and a good player.

“When we’re beating ourselves up over a football match I think we have to take a step back and think what is important in life.

"It’s very sad for his family and I wish them all well.”
