Fan groups at Carlisle United are inviting people to put themselves forward to join a new supporter liaison team at Brunton Park.

They are aiming to establish a team of volunteers, rather than a single liaison officer, in a bid to improve lines of communication between fans and club, and the matchday experience.

The previous SLO position was held by former operations manager Nigel Dickinson, who recently left United for personal reasons.

The Carlisle United Supporters Groups (CUSG) are now leading the search for not just one replacement but several.

Simon Clarkson, CUSG chair, said: “The matchday experience for fans starts when a game day out is planned.

“Supporters Liaison Officers will enhance this by providing good quality information for fans in advance of the game and then a warm, friendly presence at the ground on matchday.

“We see this as a vital role and one that, if collectively we get right, could make a big difference.”

The supporter groups say the team will provide “a visible physical and social media presence on and in the build up to home and away match days”.

They will need to be good communicators, they added, able to offer a warm welcome and a friendly face to help and engage with fans.

United will make available a working space and a dedicated supporter liaison officer email address, along with matchday tickets.

The idea of a team rather than an individual representative, CUSG added, was to allow those who want to help, but who cannot commit “endless hours to the role”, to contribute.

Matt Spooner, who represents thecumbrians.net forum at CUSG meetings, said: “Fans are crucial to any football club – even more so for lower league clubs.

“Moving from a single SLO to an SLO and a team/support network offers more fans an opportunity to get involved and help improve things for fellow fans. We think it’s only correct that fans are given the opportunity to recruit for these roles.”

The Carlisle United Official Supporters’ Club, who have two directors at United, are also backing the move. Chair John Kukuc said: “The formation of the Supporter Liaison Team is a very worthwhile initiative - contributions by the fans for the fans”.

CUSG said they are aiming to compile a list of interested fans ahead of their next meeting, which is on Monday, November 5.
