Workington Town have been handed a major boost ahead of tomorrow’s crunch League One play-off semi-final at Doncaster – with Stevie Scholey penning a new deal.

Scholey has committed his future to Derwent Park by signing a three-year extension to his contract.

The hard-working prop says he is keen to help the club continue to progress – hopefully starting with booking a play-off final berth tomorrow.

Scholey said: “I’ve really enjoyed this season. We’ve had a great group of lads playing for each other.

“It’s a good craic on and off the field and importantly for me, my family love the club too.

“I’m happy to commit for the next three seasons and look forward to helping the club progress.”

And the club directors are also delighted to keep hold of the packman.

John Walker said: “Stevie is a great player to have around the club on and off the pitch.

“He trains hard, is extremely professional in everything he does and there have been matches this season where he has played the full 80 minutes.

“That’s phenomenal for a forward who takes the ball in as often as he does and tackles everything that moves.

“When we signed him last year he was a major part of our plans and that hasn’t changed.

“He’s been superb again this season and because of that several clubs were showing interest.

“To have top local playing talent like Stevie commit for a further three years is brilliant.

“And to have him and his family as part of the Town family is even better.”

Town go into tomorrow’s do-or-die game without the injured Perry Singleton and Tom Curwen is only rated as 50/50.

But boss Leon Pryce is confident that they can raise the bar once more and reach the final.

They are travelling down today to give the team the best preparation possible and will train in Doncaster before the game.

“We want to be fully prepared,” said Pryce. “Everyone is focused on winning this game and making sure we give it our all.

“We’ve had a big push at training to get as many as possible down. We had a big session on Tuesday and again on Thursday and I’m over the moon with how things are going. I just can’t wait for the game.

“If they perform the way they have just trained then we are in with a good shout.

“It will be tough, we know that. Doncaster are on a good run of form but we’ve beaten some big teams this year.

“We weren’t far off beating York here and we’ve beaten Bradford home and away so we know we can perform in the big games.

“I am really pleased with how the season has gone so far but, for me, it feels like the season is just beginning.

“The big games are so much more exciting and better to prepare for. I don’t want our season to be over as, for me, it’s just getting started.”
