Adam Campbell admits he is desperate for a change of fortune as he bids to break his Carlisle United duck.

The loan forward was denied by Grimsby on Tuesday night as he went in search of his first Blues strike.

Campbell has also hit the woodwork in recent weeks but the Morecambe man insists he will keep plugging away.

"That's my career for you," he said. "If I didn’t have bad luck I'd have no luck at all.

"It's frustrating for me, but I'll just keep getting in the right positions, getting the chances and hopefully my luck will change."

Campbell could be a contender to come into John Sheridan's side at Oldham on Saturday if United fail to shake off their latest injuries.

Richie Bennett (groin) and Jamie Devitt (shin) are being assessed.

Campbell has so far made seven sub appearances in the league, his only start coming against Blackburn in the Carabao Cup.

The former Newcastle player said: "I don’t think I've ever met a footballer that's happy to sit on the bench.

"I'm desperate to get myself in the starting XI and push to score more goals and get more assists.

"At the moment, when I come off the bench I try to do my best, and on the training ground I try to keep myself fit. I'll be hoping for a start, and I'll be ready if I'm on the bench.

"The last few years I've been quite lucky with injuries - touch wood I haven't had a serious one in quite a while - so if I can keep myself fit and raring to go, and there's injuries here and there, if I can fill in and help the team that's surely what I'll do."

Campbell, 23, admitted United's recent goalscoring woes at home were frustrating.

Their 1-0 loss to Grimsby was their third successive Brunton Park defeat without scoring.

He added: "I think the boys are playing well, we're finding ourselves in good positions, we're just not getting the rub of the green when it comes to the final pass or touch.

"It's certainly frustrating. Everyone's feeling it from the manager down.

"We're letting teams off the hook. We're on top [in games] and we need to be punishing them.

"That's football - you're battering teams, on top and you don't get that rub of the green you need, then you get caught from a set play, and next thing they're sitting in, protecting a lead away from home and it's hard to break down.

"If we don't take chances when they come along, we're gonna get results like that."

He insisted, though, that Sheridan's squad would stay positive.

"I think we're a strong group, mentally tough, and we all know where we want to be. We're all fighting to get to the top end of the league," Campbell said.

"Although results aren't going our way it's not affecting mentality. We're all raring to go and put it right on Saturday.

"There have been times when we've come off the back of a defeat and managed to get the next result. Unfortunately against Grimsby we didn't get that and we need to put it right against Oldham.

"Football is a funny game - when things are going well for you, the half-chances you get go in, and when things are going against you, the strong chances that everyone expects to go in are somehow hitting the inside of the post and staying out, or there's a defender getting a block on the line.

"All we can do is keep putting the work in on the training pitch, keep going out there believing we're gonna get the result. As soon as one goal comes I'm sure they all will."

Campbell also insisted United were not finding it any harder to play at home than away.

"We don’t go into a home game expecting not to score or win," he said. "We don’t go into an away game with the opposite mentality.

"It's just away we've been a bit more ruthless and at home we've lacked that little bit of luck."

On this weekend's trip to Boundary Park, meanwhile, the forward said: "If you go to a team that's come down from League One, they're gonna be wanting to fight to get back up, the same as we are.

"We've got to be expecting a tough game.

"Bury and Oldham are very similar, they've both come down, they're both wanting to come back up, they've both got a very strong squad, but so have we.

"There's no reason why we can't go there and get another positive result."
