Comets owner vows: I’ll still tell it like it is

OWNER Keith Denham said he would pull no punches when he bought Workington Comets five months ago – and he hasn’t changed his mind!

Form guys: Keith Denham will tell his riders, pictured from left, Charles Wright, Joe Haines, Kauko Nieminen, Daniel Nermark, John Branney, Scott Smith and Carl Stonehewer, exactly what he thinks of their performances

Denham insists he wants to “tell it like it is” when it comes to standing-up and informing the fans what he thinks of the team’s progress.

“People aren’t daft and they can see for themselves if things aren’t right, so what’s the point in painting a rosy picture when it certainly isn’t,” he said.

Denham was talking after the two away defeats suffered by the Comets over the week-end at Edinburgh and Glasgow as Workington enjoyed two disappointing trips over the border.

“I’m not making any excuses. Ian Thomas our team manager has already said what he thinks and I’m with him. It has been worrying what happened at Edinburgh and Glasgow.

“If some of the riders perform like that against the top sides like King’s Lynn we would be trashed, and I won’t have that.

“The top three are doing what we expected and doing a very good job. Daniel Nermark has been absolutely superb and is clearly a class act.

“He’s going to be the top rider in the Premier League and that’s exactly why we brought him in. Kauko Nieminen and Carl Stonehewer are giving excellent backing, but that’s where the praise has to stop.

“The other lads just aren’t scoring the points they are capable of and that’s why it was so worrying over the week-end.

“I didn’t expect to win at Edinburgh but I certainly thought we were capable of doing so at Glasgow but big 5-1’s went against us at key moments. We just didn’t have the back-up to our heat leaders,” said Denham.

Both Denham and Thomas had been encouraged by the opening Premier Trophy double over Berwick Bandits, which was accompanied by a bumper 2,500 crowd for the opening meeting of the season.

“There have been so many positives about Workington speedway it’s a shame that we have had the two performances which disappointed so many people.

“We’ll be looking for a big performance, particularly from the four riders who didn’t fare so well in Scotland, when we host the Monarchs on Saturday night,” he added.

Berwick Bandits, beaten home and away by the Comets, produced a sensational performance to win 61-29 at Mildenhall in their opening Premier League fixture.

Promoter Peter Waite was enjoying one of the highlights of his speedway career when his side won so handsomely at West Row.

The Bandits have recently recruited vastly experienced Dane Henning Bager to transform their team.

Said Waite: “This has gone down as one of my best speedway moments of all time, it was awesome. I get the feeling our fortune has at last turned.”

Berwick, using rider replacement for injured Italian Guglielmo Franchetti, had five of their six riders in double figures - Adrian Rymel (14), Michal Makovsky (13), Bager (10), Tero Aarnio (10) and Norbert Magosi (10).
