Blues eye Gretna ace Murray

JOHN WARD remained tight-lipped today over a possible swoop for Gretna’s former Carlisle United ace Paul Murray.

The Cumbrian, who has had two spells at Brunton Park, has been strongly linked with another return to his first club if he leaves the crisis-torn Borderers in the next fortnight.

Oldham have already reportedly offered the midfielder the chance to return to English football, while two other League One sides are understood to be monitoring the situation.

But United – without midfielders Paul Thirlwell and Jeff Smith for the season through injury – are also believed to be considering an approach for Gretna skipper Murray on a short-term move.

Ward is keen to make a move in the loan window before it closes on March 27, but would not reveal whether Murray was on his wanted list.

“Mick Wadsworth is a friend of mine and he is keeping me in touch with what’s going on up there,” said the United boss.

“I don’t think I should name names at the moment – I think that’s unfair.”

Murray unexpectedly travelled with the Borderers and was on the bench for their 3-0 defeat at Aberdeen.

On Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Swindon, meanwhile, Ward said: “I can’t say there was football and it was pretty and nice. But it was gritty, tough, thorough, professional and other words that say when you’re up against it, you’ve got to dig in.

“It had to be that type of work and mainly because of the good performance of Swindon. They looked a very good team.”

  • UNITED’S youth team kept up their title bid with a 2-0 win at Wrexham courtesy of goals from Andrew Cook and Matthew Wood.
