Road worker 'seriously injured' on motorway in Cumbria

A roads worker has been airlifted to hospital after slipping and falling on the M6 in Cumbria.

It happened at about 12.20pm on the southbound carriageway, between Penrith and Shap, where roadworks were being carried out.

The motorway was closed in both directions for a short time to allow the air ambulance to land. It has now reopened.

The exact nature of the accident remains unclear but police described his injuries as "serious".
