Oval House in Brampton has had several lives. Family home. Pub. Children’s home. B&B. Now it is back to being a family home. And there is plenty here to interest potential purchasers.

The property spreads over three floors and has six bedrooms, five of them en-suite. There are many original features, a large garden and plentiful parking. The latter is a major plus-point in Brampton town centre.

Jane Streames and her late husband Gordon bought Oval House about 20 years ago. “We ran it as a small B&B,” says Jane. “It was great fun. We had people from all over the world, lots of walkers.

“Gordon died about four years ago. I retired from running the B&B at the end of last year. I’m selling because it’s just too big for one person.

“It would be a lovely family home. Or you could run it as a B&B. There’s pots of B&B potential and it’s growing all the time, with Hadrian’s Wall being so popular. There’s not a huge amount of accommodation around.”

The house was built in 1749. It then became a pub – The Commercial – from 1820 to about 1860. At this time Brampton had a remarkable tally of 63 pubs.

It returned to being a house and was then a children’s home before Jane and Gordon bought it.

The ground floor includes a sitting room, a dining room and a third reception room, which is currently used as a study. All three rooms have gas fires with ornate surrounds.

The kitchen has a Nobel range cooker, tiled flooring, recessed lighting and a breakfast bar. A quirky utility corridor has several side rooms including a pantry, a utility area with sink, a storeroom and a WC with wash-hand basin.

Four of the six bedrooms are on the first floor. Three are en-suite and the fourth has a private bathroom.

The second floor has the other two bedrooms, both en-suite. Several rooms have exposed beams, dado rails and picture rails.

“They’re all lovely spacious rooms,” says Jane. “The house is very quirky. Being so old, it’s got lots of little nooks and crannies.”

Outside is a secluded rear courtyard and a large rear garden.

The courtyard has flagstones and space for a patio table and chairs. A gate leads up steps to the rear garden.

This has a large lawn, patio area, borders, trees, a shed, a greenhouse and a vegetable patch.

Jane says: “It’s lovely and quiet at the back, even though it’s right in the middle of town. It’s a hideaway. And it gets plenty of sun.”

Block paving to the front provides a pleasant seating area overlooking Brampton Methodist Church.

A gated area provides private off-road parking for several vehicles.

“It’s just a lovely house,” says Jane. “I shall be really sorry to leave it. I’m planning to stay in the area. You’ve got lots of interesting things – Hadrian’s Wall, lovely walks, lovely cafes, lots going on in the arts. I love Brampton.”
