Outdoors shop in Keswick to close

A Keswick shop is set to close down this summer after more than 40 years in business.
C & CA Holmes, on Lake Road, will shut in May.
Sandra and Peter Kirkby, of Heads Road, have run the business, which sells boots, rucksacks, waterproofs and camping supplies, since 1998 but are now retiring.
They took over the shop from Colin Holmes who ran it since the 1970s.
Sandra, 63, said: “I think it will be a big miss.
“We sell a lot of little bits and pieces which people say they can’t get anywhere else.
“It’s time to make a change. It’s been here so long. People have been coming here since they were children.”
The premises will be taken over by Lakeland Slate Company as a shop selling slate products including coasters, candle holders and wine racks.
Michael Charlton, owner of Lakeland Slate Company, said: “I am looking forward to it.
“There is nowhere in the town centre for slate.
“You don’t get many chances in Keswick, especially in this location.
“It’s a gamble for any business in this climate.”

Have your say
How sad, our children are now 34 and 30, and had their first boots and waterproofs from the tardis which is CA Holmes when they were 2 . It has been a brilliant shop, and still carries more useful stuff than many of the so called 'outdoor specialists', like Ferns it will be missed, and its owners deserve a long and happy retirement.
Sorry to hear that one of the best little shops in Keswick's closing. My partner and I often pop in when we're staying in the town, as we find most of the items that the bigger outdoor gear stores fail to stock can often be found in there. It'll be a piece of Keswick's character gone, and I wish them all the best for their retirement.
