Gone but not forgotten. That’s William Wordsworth.

Cumbria’s most celebrated poet died in 1850. But his memory lives on, according to a popular barometer of the British public’s general knowledge.

This is BBC1 teatime quiz show Pointless, hosted by Alexander Armstrong.

Pointless contestants need to dredge up obscure knowledge.

Last week contestants were given the surnames of several poets and asked to come up with their first name.

One woman went for Wordsworth. Unfortunately she thought his first name was ‘John’. At least she had the excuse of being American.

At the end of each round we find out how many of the programme’s survey of 100 people knew each answer.

Seventy-one knew he was William Wordsworth, the highest number for any of the 12 poets listed.

Encouraging news for Cumbria.
