The plight of Glasgow Rangers has divided opinion among football fans.

The club, which was founded in 1873, has been liquidated after running up untenable debts.

Rangers’ new incarnation looks like being refused entry to the Scottish Premier League and may have to start as low as the Third Division next season, which would mean an interesting trip to Annan Athletic.

A Cumbrian footballer who spent time at Rangers has tweeted on the club’s plight.

Paul Reid, from Harraby, Carlisle, joined the Glasgow giants from Carlisle United in 2000.

The central defender commented: ‘No wonder Rangers are in trouble. They paid £1 million for me and Dick Advocaat called me ‘Peter’ for the whole time he was manager!!#true’.

Reid never played for Rangers’ first team. Now 30, he has spent most of his career in England, including a brief loan spell at Brunton Park in 2008.
