In a few years time we could all be paying tolls to use our roads.

There’ll be no road tax (though it might have been renamed something else) and deciding what our roads are like will depend on some major company (possibly foreign) who we will be paying higher and higher fees forever more.

It all smacks to me as a repeat of the PFI deals done for schools and hospitals that have come back to bite us so disastrously.

The prime minister used the water industry as an example of how private companies can take control and improve services.

Forgive me, but I’m not entirely convinced by this.

Almost all our water companies are now foreign owned, almost all are making multi-million pound profits almost all annually raise bills well above the level of inflation, all suffer from chronic leaks in their supply systems.

So does this mean we can look forward to a road system run by the French, where we all have to drive on the right because all their signs are made for the European market, where repairs will only be carried out before lunch and the fees to travel along them will rise faster than you can reach 0-60mph in a competitively priced family car?

Anyone want to sell a horse?
