His gravestone has been removed, plaques announcing where he lived have been taken down, streets bearing his monicker are being renamed and there’s a campaign to strip him of his knighthood.

As more and more horror stories come to light about Jimmy Savile abusing teen girls, there seems no end to the retribution to be taken on his memory.

As he is rapidly airbrushed from history, it all reminds me of how they would change the records and remove names and faces from documents and pictures in Stalinist Russia.

The best response to all the testimonies now coming to light is the one announced by the Jimmy Savile Charitable Trust.

The charity is considering changing its name and how it operates so that it provides support for victims of sexual abuse.

A spokesman for the trust said it was “actively looking at supporting, amongst others, charities that work with survivors of sexual abuse. They feel this is the right thing to do in the circumstances”.

It is only right and proper that any legacy he had left is used to help girls who have undergone similar trauma to the ones he preyed on.

Needless to say, the trustees are also looking at changing the charity’s name.

Meanwhile, the BBC is belatedly investigating claims against Savile and other DJs and presenters, so expect more shocking claims.

The Beeb also has a major scheduling headache on its hands as it has lined up three ‘tributes’ to Savile to be broadcast in the run-up to Christmas which now must be shelved.
