It started with trying to scrap free school milk and selling off our woodlands. The latest involves scrapping an order for fighter planes and imposing an idiotic conservatory tax.

David Cameron has performed more U-turns than a stunt driver in the Italian Job.

This week’s embarrassing policy reversals included him pledging to veto proposals that would have forced homeowners to spend hundreds of pounds extra on energy efficiency when they build an extension or fit a new boiler.

This started soon after the coalition came to power in 2010 when Mr Cameron ditched plans to scrap free school milk for the under fives while a minister was live on air defending them move.

Then he backtracked on the policy to cut the school sports scheme, to scrap the free books for children, sell off our woodlands and the plans to withdraw child benefit from higher earners.

Now he has gone back on a decision on the type of jets due to fly from the two aircraft carriers that are on order.

He has abandoned plans to buy the conventional F-35C joint strike fighter after costs trebled and instead, we will buy a fighter that takes off and lands just like a Harrier jump jet.

This after we flogged our force of 70 Harriers to America for just £100million last year.

Don’t expect the reversals to stop any time soon. Chances are, the government will decide not to go ahead with the hot pasty tax and will also dump the idea of tightening up on tax relief for major charity donors.

You get the politicians you deserve, they say. So we all must have done something seriously wrong to end up with the flip-flop coalition government and such a woolly, ineffective opposition.
