Rickerby Park sheep need protection
Published 4 July 2009
Mrs Bainbridge (Letters, News & Star, June 30) is another one who is completely missing the point about the animals grazing Rickerby Park – which is cruelty to animals.

Published 2 July 2009
I would like to congratulate the organisers for their hard work to help the heroes but the attitude of our council members in Maryport stinks.
Supporters have been abandoned
Published 2 July 2009
I agree with John Metcalfe (News & Star, June 19) that, in its pursuit of the middle England voters over many years, along with the near total abandonment of any socialist principles, New Labour has, in effect, ignored the needs and wishes of its traditional supporter.
Planning only for power
Published 1 July 2009
I have just read the article on ‘What Makes Cumbria Special’ (News & Star, June 29).
Farmers’ valuable service
Published 30 June 2009
With reference to the letter ticking off the farmers, when will people leave farmers alone? MY purpose in writing is completely personal and relates to my experience as a child in Carlisle in the 1930s.
Recycled dumping ground
Published 30 June 2009
There is a certain bittersweet irony about the fact that all the good efforts of Cumbrian householders to recycle as much domestic waste as possible will help free up space in landfill for nuclear contaminated waste to be dumped at Lillyhall, Workington.
Keep smoke in the pub
Published 29 June 2009
I don't agree with the plan for Upperby Working Men’s Club to have an area set aside outside for drinking – or any outdoor area on the street for smokers in any pub in Carlisle.

Vermin deserves nothing
Published 25 June 2009
HAVING read (News & Star, June 17) about the rapist Adam Carruthers appealing about the cut in his police pension makes me sick.I STOOD against Jim Buchanan for the Aspatria seat in the county council elections earlier this month and was resoundingly beaten. n I WOULD like to take this opportunity through your newspaper to thank the people of Belah who have supported me for many years and especially those who have voted for me in the last county council elections.THE announcement that the conflict in Iraq would be discussed behind closed doors, inviting comments such as “whitewash”, has prompted me to write this little rhyme:IMAGINE you are nine years old. Today you fixed breakfast for your younger brother and sister and your mum. You put some washing on, got your siblings ready for school, gave mum her medicine and tidied up the kitchen, all before school.
