How to uncover lies
Last updated 13:10, Sunday, 18 May 2008
According to a recent report, lie detectors may be installed in benefit offices to reveal claimants who may be telling fibs about their circumstances.
Lie detectors are remarkable machines and could be used for numerous purposes. For example, they could be used in the House of Commons when MPs are submitting their claims for expenses.
They could also be used when interviewing TV bosses to determine who was responsible for the premium rate phone call scams which conned viewers out of millions.
A lie detector would also be useful when investigating the Christmas hamper firm Farepak which collapsed in mysterious circumstances leaving 122,000 families £40 million out of pocket.
Needless to say none of that will happen if it involves people on the top rung of the financial ladder.
It is only those on the bottom rung who are subjected to means-testing, multi-page questionnaires and now lie detectors.
This sad situation is summed up in the words of the old song:
It’s the same the whole world over
It’s the poor what gets the blame
While the rich get all the pleasure
Ain’t it all a bloomin’ shame?
