Pots, kettles... well, we know the rest. Question Time (BBC1 Thursdays) used to be the must-see of all politically interested types – at least the ones with not much better to do of a midweek evening.

That seems a long time ago now. Days when Government big-hitters were fighting for a seat on David Dimbleby’s panel have gone. Even Westminster’s opposition minnows are few and far between now. Comics, pop stars, media people and actors are more the norm... and Piers Morgan.

This man pops up more often than a pimple on a teenager. Television talent scout, chat show host, look-at-me commentator, biographer and server of unsolicited opinion on people who rarely matter. Once one of the country’s leading national newspaper editors – and a force to be reckoned with – Piers is simply a busy, self-promoting, any time, anywhere, any show boy these days.

Though QT might not be a patch on what it used to be, only Piers could persuade this long-time fan to switch off altogether after its first 15 minutes.

“Hate to name-drop but I was hanging out with Gordon Brown last night.” Yuk!

“Actually I was also hanging out with David Cameron.” Ditto.

“I was talking to Boris Johnson at the same party last night.” Enough!

This from a man with the opinionated, supercilious nerve to call the newly elected London Mayor, silly, self-styled and lacking in substance... oh, come on!
