Parade’s at a loose end over on BBC2

PARADE’S End (BBC2) makes Downton Abbey look like Coronation Street with tiaras.

It’s the difference between Krug and Lambrini that sums up the gap. The comparison is one of fillet steak and takeout burger.

What more can one say? The cast is wonderful, the period veracity spot-on, its script is rich and seductive.

Benedict Cumberbatch perfectly captures the sensitive, strait-laced, politely screwed-up Christopher Tietjens, a man at odds with his time and all of his emotions.

Rebecca Hall is divine as his complex, long-suffering wife Sylvia. It’s possible to go on with the superlatives – but what more can one usefully say?

Perhaps only that Parade’s End is wasted on BBC2 in a Friday evening prime time slot.
