The living dead are haunting the streets of Carlisle – and hope they can scare the public into donating to a good cause.

Kat Vevers, 23, has organised a sponsored Zombie Walk through the city on Saturday, November 3, to raise funds for Jodie’s Journey.

The group has been set up by 18-year-old Jodie Vasquez and her mother Maxine Farish, from Currock, to raise money for The Sick Children’s Trust and increase awareness of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

Jodie suffers from the rare, life-threatening condition, which is causing her internal organs to deteriorate one by one.

Kat, from Lowry Hill, knew Jodie as a “friend of a friend”, but was inspired to act after reading Jodie’s story in the News & Star.

“As it is coming up to Halloween and I’ve taken part in zombie walks in Glasgow and Manchester, I thought ‘why not?’” Kat said. “It’s not something Carlisle normally does, so it was something different to catch people’s attention and raise awareness.”

The student has received an “excellent” response, with 50 people already agreeing to take part in the event.

Zombies will gather in Bitts Park, Carlisle, at 1pm where they will then stagger their way through the city centre, down Botchergate, along Lowther Street and back to the park.

Kat has successfully applied for a special permit from Carlisle City Council, allowing walkers to carry collecting tins in the hope of picking up extra donations en route.

Participants pay £3 to take part, and are then encouraged to gather sponsorship from family and friends.
