Officers were called to the cafe in Vulcan Park, Workington, at 5.35pm yesterday after a report the youngster had been attacked.

Detective Chief Inspector Mike Brown said: "We have launched an investigation into a serious sexual assault and we are treating this extremely seriously.

"The protection of children and vulnerable people within our community is our highest priority and thankfully these types of incidents are very rare."

They have appealed for anyone who saw a man fleeing the scene through the park towards Vulcans Lane in the general area of Brayton Street and Brown Street.

"I am keen to trace his movements immediately before the incident and I would like to know where he went after he fled the scene. I would urge anyone who may have seen this male to come forward urgently," added Mr Brown.

The man is described as white, about 5ft 8in tall and of skinny build with short cropped hair.

He was wearing a dark coloured top, possibly with a hood, with some form of writing or motif on the front and dark coloured tracksuit bottoms, believed to be Adidas with three stripes down the sides.

Anyone with information should call 101, go to Workington police station or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
