Work starts to remove remains of flood-damaged Cumbrian bridge

Workers have begun clearing the remaining wreckage of the Workington footbridge destroyed in last year’s floods.
Work to clear debris from the site of the old Navvies Bridge to make way for its replacement started this week.
Reader Neil Sanderson captured these dramatic pictures as the remains of the crossing were broken up for removal.
A Cumbria County Council spokesman said: “Removing the debris needs to be done before a new bridge can be put in place.
“It’s being done now to allow ground investigation works to take place to assess ground conditions for the replacement.
“The process for securing a replacement for Navvies bridge is progressing and we’ll make further details public in due course.
“We held a public consultation session in Workington back in May so people could let us know about their aspirations for replacements for Northside and Navvies bridges and this feedback is being used to shape the replacements.”
Northside and Navvies bridges were destroyed by the raging River Derwent in last November’s floods.
The replacement Navvies Bridge will cost about £1.3 million and is expected to be finished by February.
The bridge will cross the River Derwent in a single span but no further details of the design have been agreed.
A permanent replacement for Northside Bridge road is expected to be up and running by May 2012.
