Women on top form at Carlisle Racecourse's Ladies Night

Torrential rain failed to spoil the party as Carlisle Racecourse staged a night filled with fancy frocks, flying fillies, boy bands and bookie-bashers.
Carlisle’s Ultimate Ladies Night meeting may not have been able to rely on the weather – but girl power and horse power combined to ensure the fixture is still one of the most popular events in the city’s social calendar.
The Blackwell track broke new ground last year when it became the first racecourse to stage an all-female card for professional and amateur female jockeys, and the initiative proved a winner once again last night.
Top female stars of the saddle like Lucy Alexander, Kirsty Milczarek and Amy Ryan showed they’re every bit as capable as the men in their profession, while Cumbrian jockeys, including Joey Richards, Robyn Gray and sisters Natalie and Emma Sayer got the chance to shine in front of a home crowd.
Cumbrian fashion designer Karl Bowman was a clear winner of the glamour stakes after his stunning creations completed a virtual clean sweep of the prizes for best dressed women and best hat competition
Penrith-based Karl, a former leading show-jumper who is now one of the rising stars of the fashion world, designed both the dress and hat for the winner of the best dressed woman – his cousin Naomi Lowther, from Currock, Carlisle. He also designed the stunning blue dress and hat for third-placed Jane Bowman, from Houghton, and his creation for Emma Bell, from Penrith, won her best hat.
Racecourse chairman James Westoll said: “Ladies Night has become a huge event.
“It is very important that the racecourse engages with people who don’t normally go racing and they can come along and enjoy themselves.”
Around 5,600 racegoers, fewer than the 8,000 expected, were entertained after the racing by EnvyUK, a Take That and Westlife tribute band, and Cumbrian group Soul City Walkers.

I would like to add that with attendance at 5600 you would have coped well if you had taken lessons from previous criticism. In 2009 you had over 7700 attendees, in 2011 the figure was nearly 10000. It is obvious looking at the paltry 2012 headcount that you have not taken any action whatsoever.
