Woman killed in M6 motorway crash near Shap

A woman was killed in a crash that closed the M6 motorway for five hours yesterday (Thursday).
The woman was a passenger in a silver Skoda that collided with a red HGV close to Junction 39 at Shap at 3.40pm.
Police shut the southbound side of the M6 south of Penrith while investigations were carried out.
The driver of the Skoda was airlifted to James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough, with serious chest and back injuries. The driver of the HGV was not hurt.
A spokesman for the Great North Air Ambulance said: “We brought two doctors to the scene as well as paramedics.
“We airlifted a male in his 50s with chest and back injuries to hospital in Middlesbrough.
“The aircraft arrived on scene despite encountering atrocious weather conditions on its journey.”
