Police dealt with several violent incidents across Cumbria over the bank holiday Easter weekend, including an attack which left a woman needing emergency surgery.

In Carlisle, the most serious violence was in the Botchergate area of the city, with two staff from separate takeaway premises left injured after assaults.

At  Kiss nightclub on Englishgate Plaza, a female worker was allegedly assaulted by a woman shortly before 3am yesterday. In a separate incident, police arrested a man on suspicion of assaulting a worker at Rouge bar in Botchergate.

More serious violence flared at 2.30am yesterday near to the Flames Indian takeaway in Botchergate, when a man suffered a suspected fractured cheekbone.

A man was arrested on suspicion of assault, while police are also investigating an alleged assault on a man near to The Crusty Cobbler takeaway outlet in Botchergate.

At the Hare and Hounds pub In Appleby, a 33-year-old woman was arrested after another woman sustained what police say was a glass injury shortly before 11pm on Sunday. The victim was due to undergo hospital treatment yesterday.

A spate of equally serious assaults from the bank holiday weekend are also being investigated by police in west Cumbria, with two victims needing hospital treatment.

The first attack was on Friday when a woman was punched in the face while she waited for a bus in Workington.  The 48-year-old and her partner were waiting in the bus station when they heard two men planning to attack them at 9pm on Friday. The couple fled but the woman was caught and punched in the face by one of the men.

The attacker was aged around 30 with a shaved head, of medium build and wearing a grey jacket and dark coloured pants. The woman suffered a cut lip in the attack, which happened on Murray Road. Police will study CCTV footage at the bus station as part of their investigation.

Shortly after 1am on Monday, in Senhouse Street, Whitehaven, a man aged 21 and a 25-year-old woman, both from Cleator Moor, were seriously assaulted. The woman suffered suspected cheekbone fractures and was due to have surgery at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle yesterday.

Police arrested a 19-year-old Whitehaven man on suspicion of assault. Officers want to hear from anybody who can help their investigation of the attacks, which happened between 1am and 1.15am yesterday.

Police are also investigating after a man in his 30s was found in Branthwaite Lane, Seaton, with facial injuries.  Police are to study CCTV images to establish his movements after he left Workington town centre early yesterday.
