A woman has died after being pulled from the River Cocker at Cockermouth.
Police, firefighters and ambulance crews were called to the river at about 12.45pm yesterday (Sunday) after a member of the public spotted a person in difficulty in the water.
Firefighters and police pulled the woman, named today (Monday) as Yet Ying Ho, of Market Place, Cockermouth, from the river near High Sand Lane and she was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.
Insp Jane Goujon, of Cumbria police, said 74-year-old Mrs Ho was alive when she was pulled from the river but died in hospital.
Police are investigating how she came to be in the river and have appealed for information.
Anyone who saw a woman with grey hair, about 5'5"-5'6" tall and dressed in black leggings with a blue fleece, black woollen cardigan and black shoes in the Cockermouth area yesterday has been urged to contact Pc Judith Mennim on 101.
Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team, Coastguard and First Responders were also called to the scene.
There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
