Woman attacked Carlisle policeman after asking him for help

A mum-of-three attacked a policeman after asking him to help her.

Susan Waugh, 35, approached PC Gerard Maguire shortly before 1am on April 14 on Carlisle’s Botchergate and asked for help before pushing him in the chest and punching him.

Carlisle magistrates’ court heard how Waugh, of Monksclose Road, off Wigton Road, Carlisle, then kicked him in the leg before he took hold of her and arrested her.

Prosecutor Pam Ward said PC Maguire didn’t know Waugh but was aware she had been dealt with by other officers earlier in the evening.

“He believed she was under the influence of alcohol,” she said.

Defence solicitor John Smith said it was a rare night out for Waugh, who had made arrangements for her children to be looked after by someone else.

He said she went round to a friend’s house where they had some alcohol then went into town.

“She doesn’t know whether she had too much to drink or if her drink was spiked,” he said. “She can’t remember what happened during the evening.

“She was very embarrassed and, when the police told her what she had done, she said apologised. She doesn’t recall it.”

Waugh, who admitted assaulting a police officer, was fined £73 and ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
