Wind turbine at Cockermouth farm rejected by planners

Plans to put a 260ft wind turbine at Wellington Farm in Cockermouth have been refused by Allerdale’s council’s development panel.
Owners Leigh and Hodgson Stamper wanted to put up the 500kw, three bladed turbine near Lamplugh Road, off the A66, but the panel felt that there was insufficient evidence to demonstrate how the turbine would affect the visual impact of those looking at the site.
The council panel also refused the application on the grounds that the plans did not demonstrate how the turbine would impact the landscape of the site and surrounding countryside.
Resident Michael Gillam said the turbine would have a “detrimental effect” on the natural landscape, would cause noise pollution and contribute to a loss of tourism.
Mr Gillam said: “This would be four times higher than the Angel of the North and 13 times higher than Mayo Statue in Cockermouth.
“This modern steel structure would be totally out of keeping with the landscape and would be seen by anyone visiting the area.
“The turbine would be on the edge of the valley so there would be a greater reflection of sound.
“It would put tourists off from visiting the area and if it was approved a precedent would be set allowing more and more wind turbines to be approved in the area.”
Sarah Steel, whose family live and work on Dubbs Farm in Eaglesfield near the proposed site, said: “No one locally was consulted about these plans before they were submitted which is a totally un-neighbourly act.
“We have a variety of different owls, bats and birds which would be disturbed by the preparation of this site.”
Allerdale had received 64 letters of objection prior to the meeting.
Cockermouth Town Council, Greysouthen and Papcastle parish councils had all objected to the plans.
The panel voted 17 against and two for the plans.
