A man who died in hospital after being hit by a car while crossing a road in Carlisle has been named.

He was Kenneth Graham, aged 67, of Newtown Road, in the west of the city.

His wife Natasha said he was the most perfect husband a wife could wish for, adding he was her "rock."

Police say Mr Graham was crossing Newtown Road when he was struck by a Skoda Octavia car at about 9.35pm on Saturday. The car was being driven towards the city centre.

He was treated at the scene by members of the public and ambulance paramedics before being taken to the nearby Cumberland Infirmary, where he died.

Two men, aged 41 and 35 years, were arrested on suspicion of causing his death. They have since been bailed.

Mrs Graham said her husband was born in Carlisle but spent many years abroad where he met her.

She moved to Carlisle with him in 2003 and they married in 2004.

Heavily involved in property development and real estate, Mr Graham had built several houses in Carlisle and elsewhere. He enjoyed sailing and fishing off the west coast of Scotland.

“He wanted to do so many things, he had so many interests. He was known to all that met him as a special, kind and caring man. Losing Ken leaves a hole in the lives of all the people who knew him which can’t be filled.

"Everyone who knew him knows what a deeply special person he was,” said Mrs Graham.

“Nothing can ever prepare one for such a tragedy. And when it happens all one can do is to draw strength from the happy memories of a very, very special person.

"His loss leaves me inconsolable and I would not wish for anyone to experience the depth of despair a tragedy like this leaves behind.

“While it will take some time for the pain to subside we would appreciate that this tragedy is handled with dignity and respect for the people who have been left behind,” she added.

Mr Graham also leaves two sisters Linda and Eileen.

The case is being led by officers from the northern traffic unit, based at Durranhill in Carlisle.
