Whitehaven flat evacuated after car crashes

Residents at a flat in Whitehaven had to be evacuated after an accident involving a car.

Two occupants of the flat at St James' Court had to be moved for their own safety following the crash in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Police say a Renault Clio was involved in the incident at the flats on the corner of Queen Street and High Street.

Brickwork was damaged and the flat was evacuated while any possible structural damage was being assessed.

Part of the road was still cordoned off this morning as the owners of the building, Home Group, were working to make the area safe for the occupants to return.

  • A Whitehaven man has been charged with drink-driving and driving without due care and attention. Tom Jackson Smith, 22, of The Crescent, will make his first appearance before magistrates sitting at West Cumbria Courthouse on July 18.
