Wasdale Head Shepherds’ Meet and Show went ahead as planned despite the wet and muddy conditions underfoot.

Show secretary Mike Naylor reported a good number of entries in the Herdwick sheep classes, and for the fell race and Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling.

He said: “It went really well. The weather did its best to spoil things but Wasdale Head has a built-in atmosphere. Nothing dampens the enthusiasm of the competitors.”

Other attractions included children’s sports, dog and terrier classes, hound trailing, crafts and a parade of vintage machinery.

Alistair Dunn, of Helm Hill Runners in Kendal, was the first man home in the fell race while Kirstie Hall, of Wharfedale Harriers, was the first woman.

David Harrison, of Brotherilkeld in Eskdale, won the overall sheep champion with a Herdwick ewe.

Paul Naylor, with Glen, won the champion shepherd’s dog trophy and Peter Edmondson champion Lakeland terrier with Floss.

For the first time there was a singing class. Pat Temple, of Ulpha in the Duddon Valley, won the trophy in memory of the late Esme Smith who was a great supporter of Wasdale Show.

Onlookers cheered cyclist Joe Beaumont at the end of a 200-mile trek to raise funds for Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team. The 34-year-old from Windermere was rescued when he fell 130ft in Eskdale last year.

Although unable to walk without pain, he completed the coast-to-coast challenge on a recumbent trike.
