West Cumbrian school loses out in national race for new classroom

A school's dream of an £80,000 gardening classroom has been shattered after they lost out on a national competition.

Maryport’s Netherhall School beat off competition from more than 400 others across the country to make it through to the final five in the running for a new learning facility.

And since March there has been public vote taking place to find a worthy winner for the cash.

But Netherhall has learned that it has been unsuccessful as Myrddin Special Unit in Wales had scooped the prize.

Carni McCarron-Holmes, councillor for Maryport North, which is Netherhall’s electoral division, said it was a shame the school had missed out.

“I’m disappointed for the pupils, the children and staff. It would have been great if they’d won. However, a very worthy entrant won.

“But it’s onwards and upwards now. One of the things that struck me was the enthusiasm of the school – it was very uplifting.”

To enter the competition to win the bespoke Clearspace Education classroom, schools had to tell judges why they deserved to win the new learning space.

The panel of five judges – including Olympian Rob Hayles – were impressed with Netherhall’s plan to create a gardening facility within the school that will house a “walled community garden”.

The building was going to be used as a hub for all horticultural activity to give back to the local community in times of economic crisis. The school aimed to bring together the town by creating a practical outlet for all ages, encouraging the community to collectively grow food.

Have we reached saturation point with bars in the city?

No - the more the merrier. It helps to have choice

Yes - we could do with more specialist shops, not bars

As long as they are not all the same I don't mind how many there are
