A Workington park has been named as one of the best green spaces in the country after achieving Green Flag status.
Vulcan Park has been given the national award for public and community parks after fulfilling a number of criteria including community involvement, cleanliness, conservation and sustainability.
It is the second time the park has been given the award – the first was in 2010.
Kirsten Mawby, parks and open spaces officer for Allerdale council, said: “This award puts us on the map and lets people know we have a good park which brings people into Workington and that is what we want.
“Last time we had Green Flag status we had people ringing up from as far away as Cornwall.”
The council have worked with contractors ISS and volunteers to maintain and improve the park.
Councillor Michael Heaslip said: “The council and its partners have worked tremendously hard to ensure that Vulcan Park regained its Green Flag status and I would like to thank them all for their hard work.”
The flag was due to be raised for the first time on Wednesday Aug 1 but the mast had been damaged in high winds. The council is starting a volunteer group for the park and anyone who is interested can contact the parks team on 01900 702702 or email parks.development@allerdale.gov.uk.

Well done for all the hard work, the park is a beautiful place, what would complete it is keeping dogs on leads at all times, this would reduce fouling, most owners only let them off so they can go and foul away from them and they dont have to clean up,but once again well done the park looks great

Have your say
Fully deserved, it really is a fantastic park now after so much hard work to change it from what it was not long ago. I was there on thursday with my little girl and the place was busy with all kinds of different ages. Congratulations to all those who put in so much hard work.
