West Cumbrian nursing home to close

The Branthwaite Nursing Home at Workington is to close, the county council says.
Operator Executive Care today formally terminated its contracts with the council and NHS Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).
The 29 residents will be moved into other local care homes.
The firm says the closure decision is due to circumstances beyond its control and has been taken with great regret.
A joint statement says senior management had tried to maintain a sustainable operation but believed they were in danger of "quickly getting to a position where a safe and professional care environment can no longer be guaranteed for residents."
Executive Care has also been unable to resolve a number of long-term and more recent issues, it adds.
"A recruitment campaign earlier this year met with some success but recent changes to the local healthcare job market has resulted in an increase in staff turnover," it says.
The closure has been explained to staff, residents and their relatives.
Senior managers and a team from health and social care will meet residents and families tomorrow to talk about the way forward.
“Executive Care is working with staff to secure alternative employment for them. Where possible they will be offered transfers to posts across other homes in the group," adds the statement.
The home was inspected twice by the Care Quality Commission last year – the first of which saw inspectors highlighting shocking failures.
“Multi agency visits” took place at the home during the week of May 13 this year, to check up on concerns which had been raised about the home.

Have your say
Yet another example of profit before the needs of people. Disgusting.
I agree with Moira I worked there from 1994-2006 we built it up from 9 residents when the IBH Private Hospital side closed to full capacity it was hard work and spent many an extra hour doing good for the home to build it up. Sadly it went down hill from 2006. Great memories with great residents and staff- so sad to hear of its closure
