West Cumbrian in Algerian hostage drama

An engineer from west Cumbria is believed to be among the hostages freed when Algerian security forces stormed a remote gas complex on Thursday.
Islamist extremists are still holding out at the Amenas plant in south-east Algeria.
The authorities have given no clear sign of how many people are still alive or captive at the site, run jointly by BP, Norway’s Statoil and Algeria’s state-owned oil company.
The Algerians say 12 hostages and 18 militants died in a military attack on a convoy of militants on Thursday.
But the militants claim that 35 hostages were killed.
