West Cumbrian girl starts book club - but more boys wanted

A 10-year-old girl has started a book club at school and it’s already proving popular – but only with girls.
Bookworm Emmie Annand, 10, a year five pupil at Westfield Primary School, on Nilsson Drive, Workington, set up the club this month which is held every Thursday.
Year three to six girls who have joined the club include Courtney Riley, Katie Matear, Ebony McGee, Kayleigh Dawes, Libby Matear, Chelsea Humes, Megan Humes, Lucy Stephenson, Jade Brown, Sian Beck and Siobhan Porter.
Emmie, also a pupil librarian at the school, said: “I started reading when I started school.
“I would say I was about four.
“I’ve always loved reading and my favourite author is Enid Blyton because I really like mystery books. My friends and I were always talking about books so I thought why don’t we set up a club. It’s important for young people to read to help them through their education and gain other skills.
“More girls have joined the club than boys and we’re not sure why. We only have one boy at the moment, so it would be nice to see more join in the future.”
Emmie has entered the club into the Read for my School competition where students are given a reading list of around 50 books. They have to record how many books they have read on the competition website in order to win books for the school.
As part of the competition, Emmie has ordered some books from the list which the school does not currently have, and must do a PowerPoint presentation about the club in front of her class.
