West Cumbrian drug addict given last chance by court

An amphetatmine addict who has been taking drugs for 20 years has been spared prison and given a last chance.

Gary Robinson, 37, of Ewanrigg Road, Maryport, had already admitted possessing amphetamine with intent to supply.

At Carlisle Crown Court, prosecutor Alan Lovett said Robinson was caught by police after they raided his home on November 28 last year.

Mr Lovett said: “There were about eight people in the house. A bag of powder was removed from a surface in the kitchen.”

It contained amphetamine with a street value of £170.

“A small bag was also found in Robinson’s jeans pocket. Some scales, a cannabis grinder and a phone were also seized.”

The court was told that during a police interview Robinson admitted using amphetamine and said he had had a habit for about 20 years. He said he usually injected it.

Texts found on his mobile phone suggested he was dealing drugs to a group of people who financed his habit.

The court heard that Robinson helps look after his partner who has health problems and that he has had a positive influence on her life.

Judge Barbara Forrester, who told Robinson this was his last chance, said: “I accept that you were playing a significant role in the supply of drugs to users but I also accept that it was a small amount and of low purity.”

Robinson was given an eight-month prison sentence suspended for two years.

He must also complete a 12-month drug rehabilitation order with a supervision requirement and a curfew from 8pm to 8am each day for four months.
