Weekend events across Cumbria aiming to beat predicted rainfall
Last updated at 11:30, Thursday, 26 July 2012
It is a rare weekend when outdoor festivals, races and events have NOT been cancelled.
However, Saturday and Sunday bring with them a host of family days out – despite pessimistic forecasts for heavy rain.
Potfest returns to Hutton-in-the-Forest, near Penrith, for three days – Friday to Sunday – to celebrate some of the world’s most creative sculptors.
The event takes place in marquees in front of the historic house, offering visitors the chance to also explore the grounds including the walled garden, topiary terraces and woodland walks.
Tickets cost £6 per adult, with accompanied children getting in for free.
Saturday also brings with it one of the region’s largest agricultural shows.
Penrith Show, which began in 1833, takes place at Brougham Hall Farm and organisers have reassured visitors it will definitely go ahead.
A statement on its website last week aid: “Despite the terrible weather and cancellation of many shows around the country, we are pleased to announce Penrith Agricultural Show will be going ahead as planned.
“The show field has been cut, deadline for entries for the classes has gone and the final preparations are now taking place.”
Running from 9am until 6pm, it includes a variety of prize cattle and livestock classes, trade stands featuring everything from clothes to toys, and main ring entertainment for the whole family. Tickets cost £10 for adults, £7 for concessions and £4 for children, with a family ticket costing £25.
Carlisle Racecourse is also getting back on track, following the disappointment of the cancelled Madness gig, headliners at this year’s Stobart Summer Festival.
Sunday will bring with it an afternoon of racing and family entertainment, including a climbing wall, Punch and Judy show and other attractions.
Full details of the fixtures can be found at the racecourse website by visiting www.carlisle-races.co.uk with ticket prices starting from £12, with accompanied under-16s going free.
Other events in the region include Silloth Kite Festival, and in Langholm there is the annual Common Riding event.
