New warning as snow and gales set to hit Cumbria

A new weather warning has been issued with snow and gale force winds forecast to hit Cumbria today, resulting in potential blizzard conditions.

The MET Office issued the yellow weather warning - meaning to be aware - this morning.

Police are urging drivers across the county to take extra care, particularly on higher ground.

The warning was issued as a band of rain and snow started to cross northern England.

Combined with gale force winds, it has the potential to cause blizzard conditions.

The MET Office warned of potential travel disruption as a result of difficult driving conditions.

Although the snow may clear by mid afternoon, it is likely a second spell will hit parts of the county later in the day.

It is not yet known which areas are likely to be worst hit, but anyone driving on higher ground and mountain passes should take extra care.
