Virgin Trains is introducing a £16 off-peak return fare from Carlisle to Glasgow, to run over the festive season.

The city is a Mecca for shoppers at any time of year, but the rail company has said it hopes to entice more people to choose it as their present-finding destination – or at least somewhere for a festive day out.

The rail fare is a 30 per cent discount off the price of a standard off-peak day return to Glasgow, with even more savings available on first class travel.

The Shopper Ticket is available after 9am for walk-up travel on any of Virgin Trains’ frequent services between Carlisle and Glasgow from December 9 to January 12.

A standard class off-peak day return will be £16, while a first class off-peak return will be £36.

Scott Taylor, chief executive of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, welcomed the offer saying: “We’re delighted to support Virgin Trains’ Christmas shopper ticket incentive.

“This great value offer will make the city even more accessible for leisure visitors throughout the festive season.

“In just over an hour, those travelling from Carlisle can be in the heart of Glasgow, ready to enjoy the city’s renowned warm welcome and some of the best Christmas shopping in the UK; with more than 200 city centre retailers having extended their opening hours during the festive period.”

Gary Iddon, who is Virgin Trains’ general manager for North England and Scotland, added: “This is a great offer for people in Carlisle who are within easy reach of one of Britain’s best shopping destinations.

“With a service at least every hour for most of the day, it couldn’t be easier to enjoy a comfortable and convenient journey to Glasgow.”
