Unitary authority for Cumbria plan back on table

A fresh bid to have a single unitary authority created in Cumbria to replace the current two-tier council system could be up and running later this year.

Stewart Young: ‘We don’t want people parking on the roads’

Cumbria County Council’s ruling cabinet has agreed to look at the issue once again following moves in other parts of the north west to see a unitary authority put in place.

Leader Stewart Young said: “Chorley has put in a bid to Eric Pickles to become a unitary authority and take itself out of Lancashire.

“Lancashire County Council opposes it because it says Chorley is too small and won’t be able to deliver services but they are in a position where not everyone agrees on it.

“We know that usually if everyone agrees then Government have said they will consider it.

“So if Government is now proposing to entertain a proposition that does not have universal agreement then there could be an opportunity opening up for us.”

Cabinet will consider the issues again, Mr Young said, after the summer.

He said the creation of a unitary authority would help to save public money at a time when all local councils are facing multimillion pound budget cuts.

Have your say

It is interesting that there appears to be support for a unitary (or possibly two or more)in the replies submitted while at the same time the residents of Penrith seem happy to pay more council tax by wanting another layer of administration in the form of a town council.

Cumbria is crying out for a unitary authority -one or two -we are being badly let down by all of our politicians who continue to defend/drag their heels on the status quo. Look at the discrepancies in delivery of public services across the county and the overall costs of seperate councils. It should have gone ahead a few years ago.
