Under-threat hospital bosses in Cumbria given CV writing lessons

Under-threat hospital managers are being offered lessons in CV writing and interview techniques ahead of a takeover that could see some of them lose their jobs.

The News & Star can reveal that Neil Goodwin, the interim chief executive of the Cumberland Infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital, has invited managers to informal seminars entitled ‘Preparing for Acquisition’.

The invite says the sessions will “discuss what the acquisition means for managers, likely impact and timescales and, most importantly, how managers can prepare for the future.”

But health union the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has labelled the sessions “crass and offensive”.

Carlisle and Whitehaven’s debt-stricken hospitals are in the process of being taken over by new bosses from Northumbria Healthcare. As part of this, the overall management structure will be reviewed.

Dr Goodwin – who also runs a health consultancy firm offering services such as leadership development, coaching and mentoring – is therefore holding two seminars at the Cumberland Infirmary’s lecture theatre later this month.

The topics to be covered are listed as: preparing your CV; preparing for interview; seizing new opportunities; adapting to change and different styles of working; and development opportunities.

Estephanie Dunn, operations manager for the RCN Northern Region, has repeatedly raised concerns about staff shortages and patient safety issues at the trust. She has now hit out at the sessions, saying it was not an appropriate use of the interim chief executive’s time.

She said: “First we have a trust that has been catastrophically mismanaged over a period of many months.

“Now, while we await the new management team from Northumbria to come in and sort out the mess, we find that the acting chief executive, rather than begin to address some of the crucial patient safety issues that we have highlighted, is too busy designing life-rafts for his fellow managers, on how to apply for new jobs elsewhere.

“This is crass and offensive, particularly when you look at the fact that there are no similar plans announced to help the frontline staff who are left behind when he clears off.

“He should get on and sort out the mess he has presided over – that is what he is paid to do, after all. He is not paid to do career coaching for his own management team. Despite twice emailing the trust for clarification for transition support for the frontline, we have had no response.”

The trust declined to comment.

Another question to ask ....is Dr Goodwin running these sessions as part of his Chief Exec role or as Dr Goodwin as part of his consultancy, and will the Trust be paying a fee to his consultancy company for these sessions? A question for the RCN to pose and a question for the open session of the Trust Board meeting.

Apologies if I am writing about something that has already been commented (cannot be bothered looking through all the previous ones) but..... if these guys are managers or in managerial positions, shouldn't they already KNOW how to write a CV?
