A three-vehicle crash shut one of north Cumbria’s roads today.

Two people were injured in the smash on the A6071 Longtown to Brampton route.

It happened just before 7.45am one mile north of Brampton at Irthing Bridge and led to the road being closed for some time between the junctions for Laversdale and Newtown.

Road blocks were set up and diversions put in place.

The smash involved a Volkswagen Golf, driven by a man from Longtown, a Peugeot 207 driven by a 24-year-old Brampton woman and an Alfa Romeo 4X4, driven by a 20-year-old from Irthington.

Police said the Golf driver was trapped following the crash and suffered “significant leg injuries” that were classed as “not life threatening”.

A passenger was also trapped and fire crews got them both out.

The Alfa driver was said to have hip injuries that were non-life threatening. The Peugeot driver was said to have escaped injury.

Both the injured people were taken by ambulance to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

Police launched an investigation into the crash. They were this morning waiting for the Highways Authority to remove the vehicles.

Debris was strewn across the road following the collision.
