Trust bosses agree to close Carlisle's cottage hospital

Plans to close Carlisle’s cottage hospital, Reiver House, and move more care into the community have been approved.

Bosses of the Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust today gave their backing to the scheme.

However, there was some criticism about how the move has come about, following decisions from commissioners.

Chief executive Claire Molloy said they had to make sure they were engaging with the public at an early stage.

Reiver House is a 14-bed community hospital-style unit in the grounds of the city’s Cumberland Infirmary.

After a successful trial, bosses have now agreed to close the unit and instead use the money it costs to run it to provide more care in people’s own homes across Carlisle.

Have your say

reiver house is the only community hospital for Carlisle patients! anyone not safe to go home due to their rehab needs, NEEDS reiver to stay open!! Brampton and wigton will be full and longer waiting lists to access these!! family may not be able to visit further afield which is unfair to the individual who are usually the elderly and sometimes confused with dementia only to be made worse! what about people whos homes need adapted after illness and therefore unsafe to go home to????
this surely has not been thought about enough!!

I don't agree with them closing reiver house down but do agree there is money to be saved. Instead of closing it down they should have moved it to another more suitable premises owned by them instead they are paying the lease on the building and with reiver house being upstairs and the lift being to small for hospital bed to fit in its a pretty pointless hospital for elderly who have no family or are bed bound as they are having to be shipped off to the likes of Wigton and brampton hospital.... If they have no friends family who drive it can be very upsetting for them being stuck in these hospitals with no visitors being able to visit.

What do you think of rail services in Cumbria?

Good. But there is always room for improvement

Not good: There needs to be much more investment

I rarely travel by rail
