Robert Barclay, who was known as Sam, died at his home in Beeby Street at the age of 72.

He was best known for his time as landlord of the Ancient Mariner, which was nicknamed the Honky Tonk, in the late 1970s.

His grandaughter Claire Pearce, of Clay Street, said: “It was always him and my grandma, like a comedy duo with the pair of them.

“They were always together.”

He battled bladder cancer successfully several years ago but it returned recently.

Sam, who was born in Workington and brought up in the Marsh area, worked at the steelworks for 10 years before going into the pub trade. He is also survived by his daughters Edeline Armstrong, Louise Wilkinson and Amanda McNeill, son Ashley Wilkinson, 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
