The Helvellyn Challenge is the new creation of the Dodo Dairy ice cream parlour on Lonsdale Street in Carlisle city centre.

It features 10 scoops of ice cream – all different flavours – as well as two toppings, two sauces, wafers and extra whipped cream.

It is the creation of boss Andrew Dawson, 28, who lives near Penrith.

He said: “For the challenge itself I had seen similar things on the programme Man v Food and they always seemed like a big deal.

“It is a way of engaging with the public.

“We named it after Helvellyn because it isn’t the highest mountain in Cumbria but it is the most well-known.”

The challenge is to eat this sugary concoction in the fastest time possible.

Eaters’ time is recorded, photo taken and placed on a wall of fame.

The ice cream parlour opened on May 7 and this challenge has been one of its main talking points.

“People talk about it a lot more than they actually do it,” joked Mr Dawson.

So far, seven people have attempted this challenge, with the fastest time yet recorded as 12 minutes.

Mr Dawson has come up with a few ideas for how to succeed.

“Don’t try to go too fast at the start,” he said, pointing out that this can cause you to slow down dramatically before the end of the challenge.

“Practice helps, if you eat a lot generally, it is going to set you in good stead.”

Mr Dawson is a former teacher at Richard Rose Morton Academy and moved into this business because of a desire to work for himself.

“I really love ice cream and often I used to visit my wife in the north east when she was at university and we would go to an ice cream parlour there.”

He decided this was something that could be brought to Carlisle.

When asked about the amount of calories in the dish he replied: “I wouldn’t like to think.”

He added: “I wouldn’t recommend trying it every day.

Anyone interested in trying the challenge can call into the parlour between 10am-5.50pm seven days a week.
